Video of my 3 day hike from the town of Mt Beauty to the summit of Mt Feathertop where I met 2 guys who had camped there. The scene with the wombat is grainy because I had to quickly film it with my iphone as my digital camera was in my pack.
It took me 48 hours to reach the summit (up-hill) and only 7.5 hours to return to Mt Beauty (down-hill).
During the hike through the snow I was testing a pair of MSR snow shoes that I hired and found them to be good for the uphill climb but on the way down I would have been better off with small crampons or just normal hiking shoes. Snow shoes are not totally effective on a steep downhill hike.

WARNING IN WINTER THIS IS POSSIBLY VICTORIA'S MOST DANGEROUS MOUNTAIN
This mountain has claimed many lives because people have underestimated the danger of the cornice, the cornice is much bigger at the summit of Mt Feathertop. During winter a cornice of ice will form along the east side of the ridge, this cornice starts roughly at North Peak and then becomes larger towards Feathertop summit. DO NOT STAND ON THE CORNICE, it will collapse, many people have died from standing on the cornice, it collapses and they slide hundreds of metres down the east side like an avalanche. Ironically this section of Feathertop is named 'Avalanche Gully'
The slopes of Feathertop are very steep compared to other Australian mountains, I myself lost grip as I began to walk from the summit down a very steep section, I slid about 3 metres before luckily grabbing hold of a boulder that was protruding from the snow. Without that boulder to grab hold of I may have continued sliding hundreds of metres to the rocks below where one could easily die. There was no damage to me but the boulder tore through my Goretex and Down jackets.
