Asylum seekers will be removed from a hotel in Epping after a judge blocked their stay, siding with local residents and the council against government meddling.

The Bell Hotel had turned into a hotbed of trouble, sparking violent protests and leaving police officers injured. Epping Forest Council took action, securing a High Court injunction to protect the community.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper tried to stop the move, warning that other councils might follow suit, but the judge threw out her bid. The council now has until 12 September to clear the site.

The court also ruled that The Bell is no longer operating as a hotel, backing the council’s claim that the government’s migrant scheme breached planning laws.
