Ever wondered how the LM317 and the 78XX series of voltage regulator ICs work? Well, wonder no more! In this video we'll be taking a look at how they are constructed inside and how to design your own discrete series pass voltage regulator.

First we'll go from a simple zener regulator, to a buffered zener, a very simple and common adjustable discrete regulator, and an OpAmp-based one, then in the latter part of the video we'll look "inside" the 7805 and LM317 using their datasheets and see how our examples are actually applied in real life.
