Introduced by the British colonial govt in 1870, the law was used to oppress Indian freedom fighters and civilians. Now, India’s Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Union Government over the sedition law. But this is not the first time that country's legal system has questioned the sedition law's legitimacy. Political experts say that several governments have used the law to suppress opposing voices. The Law Commission in its report in 2018 reminded the Centre that UK itself abolished the law over a decade ago, calling it draconian. Should India also abolish the Sedition law?
