🔊🗣️🎶 As the day progressed and the overcast skies turned blue and sunny, our window of catching fish was dwindling since most fish have eaten in the early morning and aren’t hungry for bait. @RobAnnis’ luck continued, catching a coho and lingcod, albeit in the catch-and-release category—but at least he already had three fish on ice. I on the other hand, was about to go home with nothing—a metaphor for parts of my life in general—despite my best efforts.

Then I reacted to a shaking fishing rod and started turning the reel. The situation was familiar; it was something as heavy as the one that got away in Part One. I used my newly acquired knowledge from @Dave_NMA and Captain Dan: be patient, feel the fish and give it as much slack it needs, while maintaining a light tension at all times—or else it’ll either run away or break things off. (Didn’t I mention in Part Two that #fishing is the perfect metaphor for #relationships?) The flirtation endured for over 8 minutes, and ultimately I learned from my mistake the first time by giving more slack in the end. And voilà!

In came a 13 lb. spring/Chinook/king #salmon—the largest, trophy salmon species of the Pacific—that was well-raised in a hatchery and worthy to take home to mother. (My mom is going to love making a sinigang stew with the fish head.) In the end, I felt accomplished, like I hadn’t been the kid to get picked last in elementary school. I’m told that while Chinooks can come in upwards of 20 lbs., my catch was the biggest Chinook of the lodge’s 2025 season so far.
