Hong Kong police arrested 53 pro-democracy activists and politicians on Wednesday,.... for allegedly undermining the government.
It is the biggest crackdown yet against the opposition camp,....since Beijing imposed its controversial national security law.
The arrested politicians are accused of trying to overthrow the government.
They had helped to run an unofficial "primary",... to pick opposition candidates ahead of the postponed 2020 elections.
"To us, this is ridiculous to the extreme.... we think that who actually pushed Hong Kong through a steep cliff is the political power who behaved treacherously in not observing what has been promised (to) us under the Basic Law."
Among the arrested is American lawyer John Clancey who participated in pro-democracy protests in the city.
China imposed the national security law,.... saying it was necessary to curb months-long pro-democracy protests.
