So, there you are. You're sitting at your desk, trying to write a little something.

Maybe a blog post. Or a bit of copy about something new and cool you're offering. Or maybe an article for your email newsletter.

And you make a good start. The words are starting to flow onto the page. And then, not so much.

You write a few words, then you cross them out. You start in again, but bleah!

It's just not happening.

You're just not feeling it. And you're stating to get a little frustrated. Whatever you write feels flabby and superficial... maybe even (dare I say it) boring.

Well, before you throw in the towel and start losing your focus by visiting Facebook or checking your email (again), let me help you out with one of my favorite writing prompts. This baby has been a lifesaver for me, and now I'm passing it along to you.

When the writing process is dragging down, or the words just aren't flowing like you want them to, or you feel you're just not getting to the beating heart of the matter, use this prompt and see what comes.
"What I really mean to say is...."

And then let yourself write.See what bubbles up.

And if you write a few words and phrases and then get stuck again, use the prompt again.

"What I really mean to say is..." or "What I really want to say is..." And just write whatever comes up and out of you.

This nifty little phrase, when used consistently, will dig you down into that secret place where your real message lies.
It will throw you into the flow of what really wants to be said. And the words that follow and flow onto your previously blank page may surprise you.

This prompt was given to me many moons ago in a writing group I was in, back in Sebastopol, California. It has served me well. And now, I hope it will serve you equally well.
So, use it. Don't lose it. And pass it on to someone else.
