A trip I've been looking forward to for over half-a-year finally came to fruition as I would spend several days in Chama, New Mexico to attend the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad's K-36 100th Anniversary celebration. Specifically, I would participate in multiple days of photo freights hosted by Dak Dillon Photography. Dozens of others and myself witnessed history as former Denver & Rio Grande Western K-36 class "Mikados" #484 & #488 would power our photo freights for 3 days of mountain railroading as it would have looked back in the day. #487 would be handling the daily train, which we would see on both ends of the railroad during our time there.

Day 1 consisted of two runs up the 4% grade to Cumbres Pass with #488 on the point and #484 on the rear with a caboose. On Day 2, we would all ride the photo freight to Antonito, CO with various stops along the way at many points only accessible by train for photo runbys. We would then take a bus from Antonito back to Cumbres Pass to get to all our vehicles to get back to Chama. Day 3 would be an early one, as we would depart Antonito just before dawn in order to get morning light shots at Ferguson's Trestle before continuing on to other points along the route to Cumbres Pass. We would also stop at more spots that are only accessible by train for more scenic runbys. Once we reached Cumbres Pass, we would take the bus back to Antonito where our vehicles awaited us. Some of us would stay slightly longer and catch the inbound train from Chama on the straightaway right before the station in Antonito. All in all, this was truly a spectacular event and a big thanks goes out to Dak Dillon, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, and everyone else who made this event possible! I hope y'all enjoy!
