Fruehauf Trailers founded an entire industry and made possible all the truck trailers of today and our mass movement of goods. AMT made model kits of their trailers back in the 1970s and today Round 2 is reproducing those kits and making them for sale again. I talk about the history of Fruehauf trailers and do product reviews of two 1:25th scale AMT model kits; a Fruehauf FB Beaded Panel Dry Van Trailer and a 9,000 Gallon Round Style Fruehauf petroleum tanker trailer.

“A truck is like a horse; it can pull more than it can carry!” was one of August Fruehauf sayings. So, Fruehauf built trailers.

But first let’s talk about the founding of an entire industry.

The Saga of the semi-trailer began in 1914 when Frederic M. Sibley, asked August Fruehauf, a successful carriage builder in Michigan, to develop a way to transport an 18-foot boat behind a Model T. Since the model T Ford had four wheels Fruehauf must have reasoned he only had to develop a long trailer with two rear wheels and a way to connect his creation to the model T. Since his creation was neither a wagon nor a cart nor a car trailer because of its length, Fruehauf decided to call it a semi-trailer. Therefore, August Fruehauf received credit for naming his invention the semi-trailer.
