I'm often asked how to get started, especially when you see drawings like these that look complicated. The truth is, anyone can do it. Today, I'm going to break down the process step-by-step using just a couple of pens.

Getting Started: The Essentials
First, let's talk about what you need. You don't need fancy equipment. All you really need is a sketchbook and a couple of ballpoint pens. I'm using a red and a blue one today to show you how you can create depth and contrast with just two colors. A pencil and an eraser are optional but helpful for your initial sketch.

Step 1: The Initial Sketch
This is where you plan your drawing. Don't press too hard. Just lightly sketch the basic shapes and outlines of your subject. Think of it as a skeleton for your drawing. I'm sketching a couple dancing the tango here, so I'm focusing on their posture and the flow of their bodies. Don't worry about the small details yet. This is just to get the proportions right.

Step 2: Starting with the First Color
Now, let's pick up our first pen. I'm starting with the blue pen. I'll use this to define the man's figure. Remember, with a pen, you can't erase, so be confident but also deliberate. I'm using a technique called hatching, where you create parallel lines to fill in areas. To make a section darker, just add more layers of lines on top of each other. Step 3: Introducing the Second Color
Next, I'll bring in the red pen for the woman's dress. This is where the magic happens. By using two contrasting colors, we create visual separation and a lot of dynamic energy. I'm using the same hatching technique on her dress, making the lines more prominent to show the texture of the fabric. I'll use the red to emphasize the flow and movement of her skirt.

Step 4: Adding Details and Shading
Now that the main figures are defined, we'll go back and add the final details. Look at the sketch and identify the darker areas. In my drawing, I'm adding more lines to the man's suit to make it stand out. I'm also adding subtle lines to his hat and hands. For the woman, I'm using a heavier hand with the red pen to create deeper shadows under her arm and in the folds of her skirt. This is how you create depth and make your drawing look three-dimensional.
