Strange Long Island Part 4: Bayport Sphinx

Did you know Long Island has its own Great Sphinx?

Built by Captain Will Graham over 100 years ago to attract guests to his Anchorage Inn in Blue Point, the Sphinx survived fire, demolition, and even losing its head in the 1970s.

Thanks to Bayport locals Lou and John Fontana, it was restored in 1983 and still stands today on Montauk Highway.

You can also spot the last remains of the Anchorage Inn just down the road: the fireplace, and chimney.

One of the strangest landmarks on Long Island, this roadside attraction is a must-see for anyone exploring the area or interested in weird New York history.
