War in Gaza Enters Third Year: Trump Pushes for Peace Amid Relentless Violence

The Gaza war has entered its third year, marking one of the longest and most devastating conflicts in modern history. What began on October 7, 2023, with a brutal Hamas terror attack on southern Israel that killed over 1,200 people, has turned into a humanitarian catastrophe claiming tens of thousands of lives across the Gaza Strip.

Now, in 2025, US President Donald Trump is attempting to broker peace through a 20-point plan aimed at ending hostilities, releasing hostages, and recognizing a future Palestinian state. Delegations from Israel and Hamas have met in Cairo, where discussions reportedly ended on a positive note, though Israel’s continued airstrikes in Gaza have strained the fragile talks.

A War That Redefined the Region

Following Hamas’ deadly attack and hostage-taking of around 250 Israelis, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched a full-scale offensive, imposing a total siege on Gaza. Over the years, the death toll has crossed 66,000, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, most of them women and children. With entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble and aid blockades worsening famine conditions, Gaza’s humanitarian crisis has reached a breaking point.

Despite occasional ceasefires — including short truces in 2023, 2024, and early 2025 — both sides have repeatedly accused each other of violations. The breakdown of March’s truce led to Israel enforcing a near-total blockade, starving thousands and fueling international outrage.

Global Condemnation and the Genocide Debate

As civilian deaths mounted, international bodies began labeling Israel’s campaign as a genocide. The International Court of Justice and the UN Commission of Inquiry have concluded that Israeli actions amount to genocidal crimes under international law. The International Association of Genocide Scholars also ruled in 2025 that Israel’s conduct meets the legal definition of genocide.

Israel, however, continues to reject these claims, insisting it is defending itself against Hamas terrorism. Yet, the growing global consensus says otherwise — pointing to deliberate destruction of civilian infrastructure, targeted aid restrictions, and the scale of death in Gaza.

World Recognizes Palestine

In a historic diplomatic shift, several Western countries — including France, Canada, Australia, the UK, and Norway — have officially recognized Palestine as a sovereign state. Over 150 nations now support Palestinian statehood. The UN General Assembly also adopted a resolution supporting a two-state solution, with overwhelming global support, despite opposition from Israel and the US.

This recognition movement has isolated Israel on the world stage and pressured it to reconsider its military approach.

Trump’s Frustration and Peace Gamble

President Trump, who once strengthened ties with Israel, has shown increasing frustration with Netanyahu’s hardline tactics. His 20-point Gaza Peace Plan seeks mutual withdrawal, humanitarian aid restoration, and a framework for Palestinian autonomy — an approach that Hamas has cautiously welcomed.

However, Netanyahu reportedly dismissed Hamas’ acceptance, leading to a tense exchange between the two leaders. Trump, eyeing a Nobel Peace Prize, told Netanyahu: “Why are you always so negative? This is a win — take it.”

Despite these tensions, Washington remains Tel Aviv’s most crucial ally, though domestic anger is growing within the US over America’s continued funding of Israel’s military campaign.

A Glimmer of Hope

As talks in Cairo continue, the world watches anxiously. After years of relentless bombing, hunger, and suffering, a ceasefire — if achieved — could mark the first step toward ending a war that has destroyed countless lives and reshaped global politics.

Trump’s peace push, though controversial, may be the world’s best hope to finally bring Gaza’s nightmare to an end.
