A British Championships run under the intense heat of the summer, and the question on everyone's lips was, will the Frittenden Club be able to keep the dust under control. With thousands of gallons of water put on the track through the week leading up to race day, and some watering on the day, the Frittenden Club did an incredible job, and some terrific racing was seen by all.
The 250cc Championship looked to be a fight between the younger riders, with 3 time British Champion Henry Atkins coming in as a late replacement, along with Luke Harris, and who could forget the Final they put on in 2018 at Writtle near Chelmsford. Rising star in the 500cc Solo's Jake Mulford returns for another crack at winning the 250 crown, and Cameron Taylor, who looks like a sure thing for a British title in the future, but could it come today? Rob Mear, Chris Still, Aiden Arthur, and the 2 veterans and former Champions of the class, Graham Thomas, and David Knowles added more interest, and would surely be in the mix.
Reigning 350cc title holder Paul Cooper is back to defend his crown, and he knows he's got some really stiff competition in the shape of Paul Hurry. Another former Champion Tony Atkin, still on the comeback trail, but getting quicker with every meeting, and others to watch out for include Tom Perry, Andrew Whitaker, Luke Clifton, Wayne Broadhurst, and John Cox, who has been absolutely flying on his 350 this season.
The 500cc Sidecars looks like being a battle between the 2 crews who have dominated this class recently, since the retirement of Shaun Harvey/Danny Hogg. Reigning Champions Mitch Godden/Paul Smith look to have a great chance of retaining their title, after having some great results across Europe, making the podium at most meetings, but former Champions Josh Goodwin/Liam Brown will not go down without a fight. They will both have to keep one eye on the young Welsh crew of Shaun Hughes/Louis Bennett who are starting to attract some serious attention with their spectacular racing style. Could they surprise Godden and Goodwin by lifting the crown?
The LH Sidecars seem to be stronger than for many a year this season, with some new crews adding to the excitement. Champions from last year Alex Balman/Mark Hopkins return again to see if they can double up titles, but this is probably the most competitive and wide open class at the Championships this year, with so many crews on level terms. The one crew that goes into this meeting that might just have the edge, is former Champions Rob Heath/Kyle Fish. Having looked really fast and on form all season could they take the title again? With 5 Penfold's in the line-up, this will be tough for anyone. Josh Penfold/Dan Woodbridge, Will Penfold/Bradley Reynolds, Tony & Tom Penfold, Tommy Penfold/William Naden have all been flying this year, and all looked very fast in practice. Then we have multi British Champion Martin Cuff, with passenger Colin Clark, the young crew of Danny & Harry Hill, Joe & Jordan Holland, and another Welsh crew of Michael & Tim Phillips. This class really could go to anyone, and it was not short of spectacular action & drama.
With a RH Sidecar support class which included Mark Cossar, Neal Owen, Clint Blondel, Dale Fish, Terry Saunters, Tom Cossar, Will Offen, Paul Whitelam, and Michael Austin, there was no shortage of fast action in this class either.
