At no point in the entire history of my existence would I ever claim to be a proper musical theatre drummer. For one thing, I’m always too loud and in addition, I’m an okay reader… OKAY reader. Them real dudes like my friends Tony DeAugustine, Chris Jago and others… they really READ… like, throw a Jackson Pollack on manuscript and they’ll nail it, first time down, no mistakes, like they’ve been playing it all their lives… SO… Defying Gravity was another scenario where the hat I needed to wear really didn’t fit me, but in spite of that, I was required to wear that hat and present it like, “This is my favorite hat and I LOVE to wear it!” Lol…
On The Voice, the vast majority of our performances are on click. This performance was no exception…. I’m not sure how it’s done in a full-on musical theater production… I’d imagine it can vary, one situation to the next, but here, it’s all on click. Point being, all of the tempo changes as well as sections that seem to be rubato, are not. I’m listening to a click and at times chasing it, but it’s always there… the challenge is to make that feel natural and organic as if conducted. Point of fact, as a drummer I prefer that… I will admit, although I’ve done it, I don’t really like having to follow a conductor… It always feels like the job descriptions are at odds with each other. If I have a click that speeds up or slows down, I like that I’m conveying the intention of the click to the rest of my band members who tend to have drums dominating click in their mixes. In a band setting, I want to own the task of being the axle around which our musical wheel rotates.
Aside from that, this video contains all my same “old man drumming” licks… I mean… it’s still just me. Maybe before Season 14 I should practice and learn some new stuff! LOL
As always, thanks for checking out these vids… just hoping to share a little info from behind the scenes…
