Q). I'm wondering if you could do a basic explanation of what the presence control does on an amp.? It kind of seems to me like it pretty well does the same thing as the treble control. But, I've only been playing electric for a year, and I've just got this new amp with the dial on it called, "Presence." Any help here would be super.

A). Thanks for writing in Hartley! Well, I need to state -- right up front that, the Presence control on your amp unfortunately will not mean the same, or do, the same things from every amp manufacturer. But, in general the Presence control boosts the high frequency range beyond 5000 Hz which is similar to the treble control dial, but it differs in the sense that part of the output from the Presence control (unlike the Treble control), gets redistributed directly to the amps input circuit. With more power getting recalculated to the input - it basically allows for more edge, or what guitar players often call, "bite," to the amps signal. It's also important to note that because the presence control lends power to the amps input -- any changes made at that presence control are balanced out both positively or negatively by changes made from the amps volume control. So, in other words changes in volume will affect the sound as you make adjustments to the amp's presence control. Essentially they operate in collaboration. Now, let's contrast all this with the treble control dial... Those treble adjustments do not get affected by changes at the volume control, and the treble circuit is not routed through the input circuitry.
