At least two senior Tory MPs have threatened to quit their roles in government if Suella Braverman is sacked, as sources say Rishi Sunak’s patience with the home secretary has “run out”.

Supporters of the home secretary launched a rearguard action to shore up her position after Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor, became the most senior minister to distance himself from her allegations of police bias.

Sunak has decided not to sack her before Armistice Day, when there are expected to be mass pro-Palestinian protests. The prime minister is said to have concluded that her decision to defy Downing Street’s instructions to tone down an article for The Times did not warrant losing her job but is still mulling whether to sack her in a wider reshuffle later this year.
