The Royal Australian Navy cruiser HMAS Sydney (II) was sunk off Western Australia on 19 November 1941 after an intense battle with the disguised German merchant raider HSK Kormoran. The battle took place about 120 nautical miles (222 km) west of Steep Point. It remains the nation's greatest maritime disaster.

Now after 80 years, the only body recovered from the 645 on board has been identified from DNA samples collected in 2006 and extensively tested over 15 years, before being finally matched with two living relatives. Able seaman Thomas Welsby Clark, from New Farm in Brisbane, was the only crew member known to have made it to a life raft. Sadly that raft and his remains were found near Christmas Island nearly three months later.

Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Mike Noonan said AB Clark was 21 years old when he died and representative of the many young lives lost when Sydney clashed with Kormoran.
