The Pandya dynasty was one of the three main dynasties that ruled over Tamil Nadu along with the Chola and Chera dynasties. The Pandya dynasty was known for their cultural and civilizational achievements, in fields such as art, architecture, literature, and trade. They ruled parts of southern India from around the 3rd century BCE till the 16th century.

The early Pandyan kingdom was centered around the city of Madurai and extended along the southeastern coast of Tamil Nadu. They were known for their maritime trade and had trade links with the Roman and Greek empires. The Pandya kings built temples and patronized art and literature. The Tamil epic Silappadikaram was composed during this period.

The Pandyan kingdom came under the rule of the Cholas in the 10th century. However, they regained their independence in the 12th century under the leadership of Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan. The Pandyas continued to rule over Tamil Nadu until they were defeated by the Vijayanagara Empire in the 16th century.

Some of the important rulers of the Pandya dynasty include Kadungon, Maravarman Sundara Pandyan, Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan, Sundara Pandyan II, and Jatavarman Kulasekhara Pandyan. The Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, which was renovated and expanded by the Pandyan kings, is one of the finest examples of Pandyan architecture. Watch the video for a full report!
