🔊🔛 When French fur trappers came to a local creek on the eastern shore of what’s now Lake Erie, they called it a “beau fleuve” (beautiful river)—and the English mispronounced it, “Buffalo.” Today, the city still has nothing to do with the bison-like animal, but it’s definitely known for chicken, since the city is namesake of the internationally famous Buffalo Wing. Most people agree the original purveyor of these chicken wings smothered in a buttery hot sauce was at @AnchorBarBuffalo, but since that fateful day in 1964, many other #BuffaloWing places opened. And today, there’s a much heated debate on who has the best, so I was on a mission to find out for myself—or at least my opinion of it.

Thankfully I had local guides @Anna_Staropoli and her partner Ian to lead the way and narrow down the choices (and drive us around town), plus they also shared #BuffaloWings with me so I didn’t have to stuff myself at each place. In fact, we “microdosed” wings, only ordering ten at each establishment, which I think my bowels thanked me for afterwards.

We tried @AnchorBarBuffalo, then @DuffsWings, then Adolf’s @OldFirstWardTavern. We took a break to check out other things in downtown Buffalo—some shops, including @WatsonsChocolates for a sample of Buffalo’s crunchy #spongecandy—plus the cemetery were Buffalo-born #RickJames is buried, where we magically encountered an albino deer. Continuing the wing crawl, we went to women-owned @NineElevenTavern, where bartender Sean recommend we try the house Sheffield wings at Irish venue @Genes_OFWBrewery. (We forgot to order standard hot wings, so I didn’t consider them in my ranking, to be fair to the other places.) By nightfall, we found ourselves in South Buffalo to try the hot “Smitty” wings at @Doc.Sullivans.SouthBuffalo.NY, where I thought the real crowd pleaser was actually their other wing style, based on the Beef on Weck sandwich, with horseradish sauce and caraway seeds.

Of course, I couldn’t ignore @BarBillTavern, another contender in the Greater Buffalo Area, which we had the night before at their location in Rochester. Ultimately, my Buffalo Wing Ranking was determined, after many, many napkins: #6, Doc Sullivan’s (Smitty); #5, Anchor Bar; #4, Duffs; #3, The Nine Eleven Tavern; #2, Bar-Bill Tavern; and (drumroll) #1, Adolf’s Old First Ward Tavern.
