The black gum, Nyssa sylvatica, is an underappreciated and underutilized native North American tree that is an excellent choice for the yard and landscaping of commercial sites. Black gum has dark green, shiny leaves that look great all summer but its real claim to fame is the phenomenal scarlet fall foliage that begins before summer is over. Adaptable to a wide range of soil types and moisture levels, black gum does well in many settings. It is also of excellent value to pollinators which find the flowers highly attractive and is a host plant for several moth species including the Luna moth. The fruits it produces are a favorite of songbirds, gamebirds, and small mammals.
