ONE OF THE BEST atmospheres in South America - San Lorenzo de Almagro of Argentina

Unless you really know your stuff about Argentine football, you may have never heard of San Lorenzo de Almagro. Unique for many reasons - they've had a checkered history.

Champions of the Copa Libertadores in 2014. Designated by Maradona himself as the club with the most creative fans in Argentina.

Kicked out of their stadium by the government decades ago. Named after a local priest who tried to get local kids out of trouble by playing organized football. Nicknamed "Los Cuervos" or "The Crows". Still yearning to return home to their original home of Boedo...there's alot to know about San Lorenzo.

I admit, I knew nothing about the club, considered one of Buenos Aires's "Big 5", before my friend Juan invited me to a match versus Godoy Cruz. I didn't really know what to expect, but I'm so glad I went!

The atmosphere, even for a match that had been rescheduled from the day before, was pumping! "La Gloriosa Butteler", the club's ultras, generate an impressive level of volume. Their banners don't stop shaking for the entire match. And even though there wasn't much to cheer on the field, their support pushed the team to a 1-0 victory (after a very dramatic stoppage for a VAR decision, of course!).

And somehow I just couldn't escape other guys from the USA - our tickets happened to be right in front of a group from New York in Buenos Aires for a bachelor party!

If you find yourself in Buenos Aires, don't miss San Lorenzo. Internationally, they don't have as big a reputation as Boca, River, Independiente, or Racing, but they have an incredible stadium culture that you can't miss!
