Gather round friends - we’ve got another episode of Around the Fire tonight for you, and this time - it gets fiery as we challenge the presence of “Wasted Space” all across our nation.

If you’ve driven through an area of your town and seen an abandoned home, you must have thought - why hasn’t anyone fixed this? It looks unsightly, is potentially a hazard, and isn’t doing your city, or Earth any favors. In the United States alone, there are over 17 Million Vacant Homes right now. With our own homeless population at roughly 550 thousand people in 2018, we would in theory have the ability to house our citizens many times over.

So why do these areas exist? Why aren’t we utilizing them? While many areas become vacated after certain areas face poverty - some simply aren’t rebuilt because of the financial costs associated with renovating. Yet, we constantly expand and build new properties. This never ending expansion in our urban AND rural areas cause destruction of habitat, run off issues into our lakes, rivers, and streams as phosphorous makes its way across permeable surfaces. Why do we keep building, when there are already enough buildings to satisfy our needs?
