When discussing axe design understanding the context of their use and the type of work they were used for is essential. European axes often get dubbed inferior (too light, to hard to remove from the cut, badly balanced etc) because they don't fell big trees as efficiently as some of the specialized tools like double bits. The use in Europe however is not felling giant redwoods, but generally small coppice wood, and in this context a thin 700gram Italian axe is far superior to a 2kg Tasmanian pattern
