Moonlight Crow: an image of a crow in flight demonstrating the ancient technique of etching by British / Welsh artist Mark Lloyd Williams. Shows the printing plate being prepared, coating with a greasy black etching ground, the outline of the design being drawn on with a needle-like scriber and immersion in the etching bath consisting of copper sulphate and salt. The plate is cleaned to reveal a line etching in the plate. Areas to print white are then masked with varnish, and areas to print black are covered with sugar-lift compound, a mixture of syrup and washing-up liquid. The whole plate is sprayed with varnish. the sugar lift compound can then be washed out leaving the plate with a mask of the bird outlined ready for more etching, to give texture. This is repeated many times.
