USAID Assistant Administrator Nancy Lindborg recently visited Wellington to attend a meeting of a donor support group for the United Nations' Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The purpose of the three-day conference was to improve collaboration among nations which contribute substantial development and humanitarian aid, with a particular focus on disaster and crisis preparedness.

While the Assistant Administrator was in town, we arranged a press roundtable for her to answer questions about the conference, how and why good donors coordinate their activity, disaster planning in the Pacific region, and recent USAID activities, including American efforts following the natural disasters in Christchurch and Japan.

Rather than quote Assistant Administrator Lindborg at length, I thought it might be more interesting if we put together a short (4-minute) video of a few of her key points.

The donor meeting was held here in Wellington because New Zealand has chaired the group this past year, with Norway assuming the chairmanship for the coming year. The importance of the topics being discussed was underscored in dramatic fashion when large double aftershocks and attendant building collapses, landslides, and liquefaction hit Christchurch during the conference.

This year is the 50th anniversary of the founding of USAID. On 4 September 1961, Congress passed the Foreign Assistance Act which separated military and non-military aid and mandated the creation of an agency to administer economic assistance programs. In response, President President John F. Kennedy established the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Since then, USAID has worked diligently around the world to provide assistance to countries recovering from disasters, working to escape poverty, building free markets, and pursuing democratic reforms. I am a particular fan of USAID's extensive immunization and disease prevention programs, which benefit all of us regardless of where we live.
