What is a Featherboard?

A featherboard is a safety accessory that applies pressure against the workpiece to push it against the fence. This does two things. First, this allows the user to focus his/her attention on the feeding of the material into the blade. Secondly, it dramatically reduces the risk of kickback.

What is kickback?

Kickback occurs when the material is pinched between the blade of the power tool and the fence. This binding causes the material to catch on the blade and get thrown in the opposite direction and this direction is typically at the user of the power tool.

The table saw is the most common power tool that causes kickback. This for two reasons. First, the table saw is a very common tool to have in a workshop and is used almost every day. Well, at least in my shop! Second, the mechanics of a table saw and its blade. The back half of the blade is rotating up and toward the user. If the material is pinch, the material catches on the back of the blade causing it to raise and land on top of the blade. Now the material is accelerated extremely fast and in the direction of the user standing in front of the table saw.

FeatherPro Featherboard

The FeatherPro is a unique featherboard as it uses hardened foam feathers instead of the plastic fingers on traditional featherboards.

The feathers employ a live hinge mechanism that provides mechanical advantage to drastically reduce the possibility of kickback.
These feathers are replaceable, reversible, and the user can select between the standard feathers (Black) and FeatherPro's Ultralight feathers (Grey). The Ultralight feathers give the user a bit more feel as they are a bit softer. I prefer the Ultralight feathers.
