Late April 2020. There are two ways to get to the top of Signal Knob. You can decide if you want to walk up a very steep and exhausting fire road for a mile, or go the other way and traverse a shaky rock ridden two mile section. Either way you earn the memorable view of Strasburg Virginia at the top of the hike. Upon the summit there are pre set fire pits carved out of rock and enough space cleared out for several back country campers. As I was approaching the overlook and passing by the camp sites there were two men staging down their gear and getting ready to clear out from camping there the night before. I gave a friendly gesture said hello and mentioned that I appreciate the fact that in "GWNF" you can camp where you want to as opposed to Shenandoah with all their RULES. Perhaps I was venting my frustration concerning "SNP" being completely shut down. They agreed on the amicable nature of "GWNF" and said it's great to go "freedom camping."
