Описание к видео Prof Patrick Woudt, Data Intensive Astronomy in the MeerKAT and SKA era

Prof Patrick Woudt is currently the interim director of the Inter-University Institute for Data Intensive Astronomy (IDIA). Prior to this role, he served as interim Dean of the Faculty of Science at University of Cape Town (UCT) for 6 months in 2023. He also served as Head of the Astronomy Department at UCT for 8.5 years (2015-2023) and was the President of the South African Institute of Physics (SAIP) from 2017 to 2019. He completed his PhD at UCT in 1998, and after a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Munich, Germany, he returned to UCT in 2000, initially as a senior research officer (2000-2004), then senior lecturer (2005-2008), associate professor (2009-2015) and full professor (since 2016). His research interests are centred on the physics of accretion and accretion related outflows in compact stellar binaries (Cataclysmic Variables). He was the co-PI (principal investigator) of one of the eight MeerKAT legacy-style Large Survey Projects (ThunderKAT) and was co chair of the Radio Transients science working group of the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) (2021-2025). He has co-authored over 190 peer-reviewed journal articles and has supervised 25 MSc and 13 PhD students in astronomy.

Background:
The 4IR is driven by advanced technologies like AI, robotics, blockchain, and the internet of things (IoT), which are transforming industries, economies, and societies worldwide. In SA, embracing 4IR is crucial for addressing socio-economic challenges, including poverty and economic development. The government recognises that these technologies can foster growth, improve public service delivery, and create jobs. However, to fully leverage 4IR technologies, the country must invest in education, training, and awareness, especially in areas like AI, data science, and cybersecurity. While 4IR offers innovative opportunities in science and many other sectors, it also poses challenges such as the digital divide and cybersecurity risks. By prioritising digital skills development, SA can ensure inclusive growth and remain globally competitive.
