PiHole on TrueNAS Scale | 1 month review | Installation

I found a computer dumped on a sidewalk in the rain a few months ago. It didn’t have any Ram or hard drive. But it has a processor, a motherboard that looks okay-ish and a power supply. I brought it home, cleaned it up and gave it a shot. It worked. And I have since been using it for multiple things, which we will have a quick look at the end.

I have used Raspberry Pi as a pi-hole server for quite some time. But, as my needs grew, I moved to TrueNAS Scale. TrueNAS scale, being much more capable than Raspberry Pi, would be able to handle Pi-hole without any issues. Now, I can take Raspberry pi out of this setup and reduce some cable clutter around my server space. I would also be able to use Raspberry pi for some other projects. Although you can find a default version of pi-hole in your TrueNAS apps recently, I have been more inclined towards using TrueChart versions, as it offers numerous additional features.

The process of setup has just two steps and is pretty straightforward -

1) Install the PiholePi-hole is available by default in-app section of trueNAS Scale/Core. Although, the truecharts version is preferred for some rarely used additional functionality. Installation is relatively straightforward. A manual to add the truecharts app can be found here.

2) Change your router/device's DNS server to pi-hole/TrueNAS IP addressThings may differ a bit depending upon the router and desired configuration. Changing the DNS server in router settings is more suitable when implementing pi-hole across the entire network. In an OpenWRT router, one may change the DNS in multiple ways. I prefer to change it for the whole Lan as all my other devices are attached via LAN. One may choose to change it for the wifi network alone.
