“Watching the Parade “ By Dali Higa Oil on Canvas, 48”X 68”

This painting was completed after my field studies in a Miao village in Guizhou, China.

Before the procession arrives, color comes first.
Light settles on the children—their clothing, their posture, their gaze.
Traditional dress appears especially vivid on this festival day:
reds full and radiant, greens expansive and alive.

The composition forms naturally through light.
Red garments become the point of departure,
from which the eye moves calmly across the figures.
The children’s standing, turning, and looking
unintentionally establish the order of the painting.

Their expressions remain direct and unguarded.
There is no performance, no distance—only presence.

Civilization does not need explanation.
It lives in moments like this,
worn on the body,
and carried forward from one generation to the next.
