The city of Derry or Londonderry is known for its Republican street murals that began to appear during the 30 year long period known as the "Troubles" in Northern Ireland. This was the conflict between the Nationalists and Republicans seeking self government and unity with the Republic of Ireland, and the Loyalist and Unionists with their allegiance to the United Kingdom. The murals reflect themes of the those lost in the conflict, key political issues, supporters and various groups. Original ones are well maintained and new ones appear. Contemporary murals also show support for Palestinian struggles. This is a small selection of the Republican or Nationalist murals in Derry. All photos were taken by the author.
