HOW TO BUILD ENGAGEMENT WITH A PUPPY

This method leverages food drive.

Puppies learn best via:

1. Play

2. Engagement

3. Positive and animated interactions.

Here's what you need to know:

→ Build engagement with the treats.

→ Make them crave being around you.

→ Their food drive is a primal instinct.

→ You can use this at the early puppy stage.

→ Because their brain has barely developed.


During this session I was teaching my client how to build engagement with their puppy.

Her name is Lana.

However, Lana quickly progressed into position commands.

This is due to her high food drive and my luring.

Here’s how to replicate this:

1. Have them engaged and around you.

2. Reward desired behaviors like them sitting when you didn’t even ask for it.

3. Then use the treats to lure them into the desired position.

4. Reward them when they followed your prompt to sit or go down.

5. Then teach them basic recall.

6. Call them to you, with the treat at their eye level.

7. Then as they get closer, move the treat in your hand towards your pants and up.

8. This will teach them to come and sit in front of you.


Progress will vary.

This dog just happened to learn quickly.

It may take you a few sessions.

So don’t feel discouraged if you don’t get immediate success.
