A newly discovered copper plate inscription near Kandavarayanpatti in Sivagangai district, close to Tirupattur, has unearthed a significant piece of Tamil history dating back over 372 years. This ancient copper plate is attributed to the period of the Sethupathi rulers, specifically during the reign of Thirumalai Nayak’s loyal chieftain Raghunatha Sethupathi.

The content of the inscription provides insight into a violent conflict that occurred between two local streets, resulting in the tragic death of approximately 150 people. In response to this mass loss of life, land was granted as “Pali Kani” — a type of memorial land dedicated to honor the deceased and to offer spiritual appeasement through religious or communal worship. This form of justice and reconciliation showcases the socio-religious practices of that era.
