Sparc Technologies Ltd (ASX:SPN) managing director Nick O'Loughlin talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's innovative strides in green hydrogen production and its Ecosparc coating technology.

O'Loughlin outlined Sparc Hydrogen’s unique approach, leveraging photocatalysis to produce green hydrogen without the high power costs typically associated with electrolysis.

"We see a real advantage in developing a new method... completely decoupled from the cost of power," he said. The company is advancing to stage two of its joint venture with Fortescue Limited and the University of Adelaide, focusing on building a pilot plant near Adelaide. The project also recently achieved its first patent approval in Morocco, with 17 more jurisdictions under review.

On the graphene side of the business, Sparc's Ecosparc coating aims to enhance the durability of protective coatings for heavy steel infrastructure. The company is currently trialing this technology with the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, testing it in harsh, corrosive environments to validate its performance.

Looking ahead, Sparc plans to complete the pilot plant by mid-2025 and progress towards commercializing EcoSparc. O'Loughlin expressed confidence in reaching commercialization within the year, emphasizing the cost and carbon savings potential of their solutions.
