Malaga has around 10 kilometers of beaches in total, making it the number one beach destination in Spain. The city is the centerpiece of the famous Costa del Sol, or "Coast of the Sun". Costa del Sol is a nearly continuous collection of beaches in southern Spain, stretching for 150 kilometers, from Nerja in the north, all the way to Gibraltar. Malaga with its large international airport, and cruiseship facilities is the main entry point for tourists from all over the world, who are visiting the Costa del Sol. Before the 20th century this beach was mainly used by local fishermen, who would beach their small boats on the sandy banks. At the turn of the century a few enterprising locals began to develop tourism. This is when the term "Costa del Sol" was coined. Their efforts were cut short by the Spanish Civil War, however by the 1950s the tourism industry really took off. With the advent of budget airlines, and Spain's accession in the EU, tourism picked up even more, becoming the main driver of economic growth for the region. By 2024 some even complain of "over-tourism", a term that is getting ever more popular in the media.
