Halo Wars 2 should have been a defining RTS for the Halo universe. The campaign is strong, the art direction is excellent, and Atriox stands as one of Halo’s best antagonists. And yet, the game never reached the audience it deserved.

In this video, I break down why Halo Wars 2 struggled from the very beginning — from the lack of a Steam release and Microsoft’s ecosystem-first strategy, to the shrinking RTS audience, gameplay constraints, and multiplayer issues that limited long-term growth.

This isn’t a hit piece. I love Halo Wars 2. I still play it. But as a PC player who owns the game and still has to jump through hoops just to access it, it’s hard not to feel that this was a game boxed in by platform decisions long before players ever touched it.

Halo Wars 2 didn’t fail because it wasn’t good enough.
It failed because it never stood a chance.
