Since 1907, the Dan and Louis Oyster Bar has been serving downtown Portland, maintaining what one customer described as an “old-school” atmosphere. But since the COVID-19 pandemic, the restaurant has had to shell out more than they can afford, with fewer and fewer customers each year.

“We've been coming to this lovely restaurant to have Dan and Louis clam chowder and oysters and all the great food for at least a couple of decades,” customer Ned Thanhouser told KATU.

“People were always coming down here, but I think that some of the dynamics in the downtown area have reduced the amount of people that come here,” he added.

Michelle Wachsmuth, the fourth-generation owner of the restaurant, shared that with the community’s support, it isn’t too late for a comeback.

“It's not just a restaurant. It's a historical landmark in Portland. If we do not have community support right now, we will definitely not be here next year,” said Wachsmuth.

She hopes to gather more customers through the winter and keep the historic restaurant open for another generation.
