Eric Gansworth explores the complexities of Native identity in his new memoir, 'Apple: Skin to the Core.'

'So much of our history was stolen that I think the contemporary artist's job is partly to document the present for those who are coming after,' he explains.

Gansworth — a writer, visual artist, and professor — is an enrolled member of the Onondaga Nation. His grandparents were survivors of boarding schools that many Native children were forcibly taken to in order to be indoctrinated into American culture.

His latest book's title references a slur used within Native communities toward individuals supposedly deemed 'not Native enough.'

The memoir explores a number of topics, including family, reservation life, and Native depictions in pop culture, while repurposing Beatles iconography and album covers.
