"Cacophony" A Rolling Ball Sculpture/Kinetic Sound Sculpture - 2023

Another progression in my exploration of what can be done with rolling ball sculptures, (RBS). In my sketchbook, I have a note that says, "rusty RBS", and a few notes about sound elements for RBSs. I guess this is it. Though the only thing rusty are the ball bearings - (although they are patinated and waxed). Originally I thought of creating a machine that would keep a regular "beat". But as we all have learned, BBs have a mind of their own. The first element, (the escapement), can be pretty regular, and the the first module is pretty close. After that, any notion of regularity falls apart. Still, it's fun to watch, and listen to.
And, as you can see, I opted for a manual loading method - as opposed to a mechanism, or ball lift to return the BBs to the top. It simplifies the look and makes the piece more interactive. Also it only "runs" for about a minute, depending on how many balls are loaded into the hopper.

This piece is $2650., available from me, and comes with a paper pattern to locate all the mounting points. It also will come with all the hardware (anchors and screws) needed to set up the piece. In the video you can see drywall screws, but I will send you properly rusty round-headed screws to keep with the look of the piece.

It measures 44" x 55" x 7.5".
