Republicans on Capitol Hill are sharpening their focus on crime, holding two high-profile hearings this week to highlight what they describe as the devastating impact of “soft-on-crime” policies.
On Tuesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee convened a hearing titled “Blue City Chaos and Tragedy: How the Trump Administration Is Addressing the Human Cost of Soft-on-Crime Policies.” Families of murder victims gave emotional testimony, urging lawmakers to strengthen sentencing laws.
Forlesia Cook, who lost her grandson to gun violence in Washington, D.C., said watching the killer receive a reduced sentence compounded her grief.
“How long do we have to suffer?” Cook asked senators. “This is wrong. Someone needs to change these laws. I don’t care who makes the changes.”
