Thailand is famous for many things, among which is the most well-known section of the Thailand-Burma railway - the bridge constructed over the river Kwai. It was first written about in a book and later a movie was produced, which became an incredibly successful film that won several awards. Whilst the bridge may be the most well-known section of the railway, it is the Hellfire Pass that attracts a lot more people.
Hellfire Pass was the largest rock-cutting on the line. Labourers were forced to cut into the rock in remote hills without proper tools for the job. They worked long hours everyday and many had died while at it. Allied POWs and South East Asian nationals not only succumbed to exhaustion, starvation, and diseased, many were beaten to death by the Japanese guards.
There's also the Death Railway, the Siam–Burma Railway, a rail line constructed by forced laborers and prisoners of war during World War II. The rail line was built along the Khwae Noi (Kwai) River valley to support the Japanese armed forces during the Burma Campaign. More than 12,000 Allied prisoners of war (POWs) and tens of thousands of forced labourers died during construction due to disease, starvation, heat, and monsoon. The Japanese wanted the railway finished as soon as possible, so working units were made up of large numbers of prisoners spread across the entire length of the proposed route. Construction was extremely difficult, as the route passed through dense, mosquito-infested jungle and uneven terrain during monsoon season. Rivers and canyons had to be bridged, and mountain sections had to be cut away to make a straight and level bed for the narrow-gauge track. Because of the harsh and extremely difficult working conditions, this section of the railway became known as "Hellfire Pass."
