Radium was touted as a miracle wonder drug, capable of curing all manner of illnesses. The radioactive paint also glowed in the dark and was thus used to paint watch dials and instruments for use in the military during World War 1.

After the war, glow in the dark products continued to be popular. The dangers of exposure to radioactive radium were not fully understood, but into the 1920s, the companies selling radium products, notably, the United Stated Radium Corporation and the Radium Dial Company, actively tried to cover up the harm the radium paint was causing to their workers.

This is the tragic history of the Radium Girls, also known as the Ghost Girls, who glowed in the dark just like the radium paint, and who ultimately paid the ultimate price because of corporate greed.
