You need to be watchful 👀 with these sneaky special sounds because they look similar at first glance, but they make very different sounds.

ar in star & are in care- both of these special sounds have "ar" but the "are" in care is pronounced using our 2-vowel rule: the "a" makes a long "a" sound and the "e" is silent 🤫. Memorizing the "are" in care will help you not to get confused with the "ar" in star.

ir in bird & ire in fire- both of these special sounds have "ir" but the "ire" in fire is pronounced using our 2-vowel rule: the "i" makes a long "i" sound and the "e is silent 🤫. The"ir" in bird makes the "r" sound. Memorizing the "ire" in fire will help you not to get confused with the "ir" in bird.
