SUGGESTED LEAD-IN

Advances in an internet technology known as file-sharing now means it is easier than ever before to download pirated copies of movies.

While many internet users regard such piracy as harmless, the movie industry says it costs them millions of dollars and can damage the release of new films.

Now members of BAFTA , the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, which organises the UK equivalent of the Oscar Awards, are trialling a new technology designed to stop advance copies of movies falling into the hands of pirates.

VOICE-OVER:

File-sharing websites like this show the scale of the problem.

Among the files listed here are leaked copies of movies released early for review -- known as "screeners."

But a single leaked screener might be downloaded thousands of times.

The combined effect can damage sales of a new movie.

SOUNDBITE (English)
"It's seen as really low level, and I think it's just getting it through to people that it's very important, it's part of a larger criminal organisation. You're seeing the front end of it on the street, but it's what's behind it and who's affected -- small British filmmakers are affected."
SUPER CAPTION: David Parfitt, BAFTA Film Committee Chairman

Industry groups say film piracy on the net is costing the studios millions and threatening the viability of new films.

BAFTA film chairman David Parfitt is a film producer who has experienced the effects of piracy

SOUNDBITE (English)
"Films that I've made like 'Shakespeare In Love' for instance, which was one of ours -- we know that that was being shown in bars in Thailand before it was released in the US. That inevitably affects us -- you know, that's a big market, the Asian markets are huge. And to feel that it's freely available in those markets before we've released it is incredibly worrying."
SUPER CAPTION: David Parfitt, BAFTA Film Committee Chairman

Now a "secure" DVD player has been developed to stop copies of "screener" DVDs leaking onto the net.
