I did not particularly enjoy What If … It didn't quite hold my interest.

The storyline follows Benjamin Walker (Kevin Sorbo) and his girlfriend Wendy (Kristy Swanson) being together for the last moments before Benjamin has to leave for eight months, but instead he chooses a new path and leaves for 15 years. His assistant Claire (Toney Trucks) hands him a note from Wendy asking him to come to an event. After work, he goes to Clearville where he meets a magical angelic tow truck driver, named Mike (John Ratzenburg) and his troubles begin a new reality.

The actors’ performances are phenomenal but I was disappointed in the beginning when he meets this new reality when he whines and says that money means everything to him; plus he forgets his daughter Kimberley’s (Debby Ryan) name. But he remembers his youngest daughter Megan’s (Taylor Groothuis) name. He does this in front of a church which makes it even odder. In the end, he appreciates the true value of faith, of genuine love, and how money does not mean everything. Also, he breaks off his engagement with a gold digger named Cynthia (Kristein Minter) and goes to find Wendy in the same bus station they were in 15 years earlier – he seeks her out and wants to marry her.

The film's message is that God always has a plan. Be forewarned that there is kissing.

I give What If... 2 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 8 to 12, plus adults. This film
returns to theaters for its 15th anniversary on August 5 and 7, 2025 via Fathom Events.
