12 April 2023: These are the mussel lines of the Kampung Sungai Temon villagers. Tied to the floating water containers are lines of rope that drop into the waters of the Straits of Johor. Carried by the tides of the Straits, young mussels latch onto the ropes where they will mature and be ready for collection anywhere between 8 to 12 months. Before land reclamation buried stretches of natural mangrove coastlines along stretches of the Straits when the waters were cleaner, it took less than 8 months for the mollusks to reach maturity.

If the state government and its agencies were to assist the Orang Seletar with improving their livelihood, we'll probably have a better yield of mussels for the market. But they are relocating the people to a place where mussels don't exist. What's probably going to happen when the Orang Seletars are relocated, some Malay groups will be given the permits to do mussel farming in this area and they will take on foreign workers to do the backbreaking work - or maybe not because the developer may want it clear so that their foreign buyers will enjoy a clear view of the Straits and for their yachts to sail into dock without having to navigate mussel lines.
