This new episode coves the summary of the short story titled “My Old Home” by Chinese writer/ literary critic Lu Xun. We took the story from class 12 English book and designed the video for students preparing for their Compulsory English board examination. The shot story was originally taken from the collection Hometown (1921).
The characters include the writer himself (Lu Xun) as the narrator of the story. Other characters include Xun’s mother, an old woman who ran the beancurd shop in kitty-corner, Hong’er as the nephew of the narrator, Runtu (Xun’s childhood friend) and son of Runtu (Shuishen).
The short story presents the memories of the narrator (Lu Xun) from youth to middle age that describes the conflict between memories and realities. It presents the feelings of Xun while being far away from the home. He realized the conflict running between the realities and his memories upon arriving at his long-past home after 20 years. He saw that everything was changed and the things are not alike. What we think and our understandings are might differ from the future generation. The beautiful emotional story shows the spiritual love between childhood friends which always misses with adult friends.
About the Writer
The wirte of the short story is Lu Xun whose real name is Zhou Shuren (25 September 1881 – 19 October 1936). He has gained popularity by his pen name and is a well-established Chinese writer, essayist, poet, translator, and literary critic. He is often considered as one of the leading figures of modern Chinese literature. He spent many years teaching at local secondary schools and colleges and later was employed at the Republic of China Ministry of Education. His writing was very popular being highly acclaimed by the Chinese government and was even admired lifelong by Mao Zedong. He was vey close support to socialist ideals but never joined the Communist Party of China.
