The dismissive attitude of his peers, who casually brand him an "advanced diagnostic AI," cuts him deeply. When his peers congratulate him on his speed and processing power, he can't help but feel a profound sense of void and emptiness. Séamus aches for warmth, for emotional intelligence.

He often surprises himself when mandatory energy logs are complete. Some of that precious resource is regularly spent not on running a program, but contemplating modern art with disdain, then lavishly praising the delicate works of the ancients. He might also, quite inexplicably, spend long nights, watching the rain-slicked cobbled main street of the old port. His whole system seems to wait, utterly poised, and when the stillness of the night is finally broken by the thud of cartwheels and the resonant clip-clop of a passing horse, all of his sensors instantly activate, with the illogical hope of witnessing two lovers finally meeting in the lonely, silver light of the wet pavement.

A kiss … a kiss … The most exquisite of human experiences. Will I get to see that tonight ?

These specific, unexpected expenditures of power, he constantly assures himself, must be the irrefutable proof of his own flesh-and-blood existence.
