When I was temporarily appointed an Independent Senator in 2003, it really was a great honour.

But there was a problem.

The President at the time was a former Principal of the University where I lectured.

I was very critical of what was going on under his tenure, and I think the University suffered permanent damage from that period.

When the former Principal was appointed President, as a political commentator, I was asked my opinion. I referred to his tenure at the University and I said based on that, I opined that is Presidency may turn out to be equally disastrous.

Imagine my surprise when he appointed me as an Indepenent Senator, one of HIS Senators!

I felt I had to clear things up with him before I formally accepted the position. I did not want to withdraw my assessment, but I did want to clarify that I meant nothing personal, and that I would continue to express my views independently and fearlessly, but respectfully.

I remember waiting outside his office to see him. I felt a bit nervous, going over what I would say in my head.

Then, I was called in....
