Maryland is facing a new financial threat tied to federal food assistance, and this time, it stems from the state’s own mistakes.

As the Trump administration looks to crack down on misspending, states are being put on notice: fix SNAP payment errors or cover the costs.

Historically, the federal government has paid for all SNAP benefits. But by 2027, new penalties will roll out for states with high “payment error rates.” That includes cases where SNAP benefits were over- or under-paid due to administrative errors, not fraud. And Maryland — near the top of the national error list — stands to lose big.
